Earlier this week, Apple’s first HomePod officially became “vintage” in the company’s eyes. Now, rumors are swirling about a new HomePod with a screen and Apple Intelligence.

MacRumors is reporting that it has discovered code in the company’s backend referring to a new device labeled as “HomeAccessory17,1.” The publication says this identifier category is new, but similar to the HomePod’s “AudioAccessory” identifier, which means there’s already a surprising amount to speculate on.

First is that name. Since it’s not specified as being for audio, and because MacRumors said the uncovered code indicates the device will be running a variant of tvOS for its software and homeOS for its firmware, it’s probable that this will be an entirely new product, rather than an upgraded smart speaker. Like Google’s Nest Hub, this could be Apple’s approach to a smart home hub with a built-in screen.

Second is that “17,1” in the name, which MacRumors says suggests the device will use the A18 chip, making it capable of running Apple Intelligence. Apple Intelligence is coming later this fall, around the same time Apple typically announces new iPhones. It’s possible the company will also announce this product in the same window, while also debuting ways for AI to help schedule events, take calls, control lights, or otherwise help out around the house.

Unfortunately, that’s about all we know for now. Apple’s most recent HomePod was the HomePod (2nd Generation), which came out in January 2023 for $299. Like the original HomePod, it focused heavily on Siri integration, so it would make sense for a new HomePod to debut the upgraded Siri that’s coming with Apple Intelligence.

Outside of the smart home, MacRumors also said it uncovered code that references two unreleased Apple TV models, suggesting updates are on the way for that device as well.
