Companies can do things that are so evil that it's difficult to even see it from the suit's perspective. Sure, sometimes people are laid off despite being good workers, but usually, it's because the company can't afford to pay them. That's not a nice explanation, but at least it isn't outright cruel. A worker recently went viral after being fired for something that was genuinely unjustifiable. They left work early this past Sunday because their mother passed away from cancer. On Wednesday, their workplace demanded that they send a copy of their mother's death certificate, or they'd be fired. If you were to give the company the benefit of the doubt, you might think that they had previous issues with employees lying about losing family members to get out of work. However, they wouldn't even accept a program from the funeral or an obituary in the newspaper as "proof." Talk about abject cruelty.
